English Language Arts (ELA) skills and knowledge

Each year, the New York State Department of Education administers two tests to students across the state. The first measures grasp and abilities in English Language Arts (ELA). The second gauges math skills. The charts below draw from 2021-2022 scores for grades 3-8

The first chart shows results for Ontario County school districts. For context, we also provide data on the percentage of students who live in economic stress, as well as info on the percentage who speak English as a second language. The Geneva City School District ranks highest of all Ontario County districts in ESL and second highest in percent economically disadvantaged.

In addition to examining other school districts in Ontario County, we looked at ELA proficiency at other Upstate districts with similar-sized enrollments. The following bar chart shows percent proficiency for 35 districts with K-12 enrollments between 1,800 and 2,000. Geneva’s enrollment in 2022 was 1,996. The GCSD is highlighted in red.

Note: Economically disadvantaged students are those who participate in, or whose family participates in, economic assistance programs, such as the free or reduced-price lunch programs, Social Security Insurance (SSI), food stamps, foster care, refugee assistance (cash or medical assistance), earned income tax credit (EITC), Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), Safety Net Assistance (SNA), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), or Family Assistance: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). If one student in a family is identified as low income, all students from that household (economic unit) may be identified as low income.
